Reacting to truck blockades in Ottawa and at the U.S. border, Ontario Premier Doug Ford today declared a state of emergency.

Ford said he will convene the provincial cabinet on Saturday to enact orders that make it “crystal clear” it is illegal to block critical infrastructure.

The move came after the Biden administration on Thursday urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government to use its federal powers to end the truck blockade by Canadians protesting the country’s COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

Scores of truckers, part of the Freedom Convoy, since Monday have been blocking the Ambassador Bridge connecting Windsor, Ontario, to Detroit, disrupting the auto industry on both sides of the border.

(S:  See below, the owner of the Ambassador Bridge, Matthew Moroun,  advises Canada to end the mandates.)

The Freedom Convoy left Canada’s westernmost province, British Columbia, on Jan. 23 and arrived Jan. 29 in Ottawa, where protesters said they will remain until the COVID vaccine mandates are lifted.

The group has been raising money through donations to online fundraising sites, most recently, the Christian GiveSendGo site.

GiveSendGo today said it will defy a Canadian court order mandating it stop distributing funds to convoy protesters, stating on Twitter that Canada has “absolutely ZERO jurisdiction over how we manage our funds.”

According to CNN, the Superior Court of Justice in Ontario granted a restraining order requested by the Government of Ontario against GiveSendGo and others.

Ontario Attorney General spokesperson Brian Gray told CNN the order prohibits, “any person from disposing of, or otherwise dealing with, in any manner whatsoever, any and all monetary donations made through the Freedom Convoy 2022 and Adopt-a-Trucker campaign pages on the GiveSendGo online fundraising platform.”

The Freedom Convoy turned to GiveSendGo after GoFundMe, another online fundraising site announced it would not turn over nearly $9 million in donations raised through the site for the truckers.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said Wednesday that his office will investigate GoFundMe for blocking and withholding donations already made to the platform through its website, stating that the move may violate the state’s Deceptive Trade Practices Act, he said.

The truckers also raised nearly $900,000 in bitcoin after GoFundMe said it would not release donations raised through its platform.

In recent days, protesters have obstructed access to three border crossings in Michigan, North Dakota and Montana with the help of like-minded demonstrators on the U.S. side of the border who also are protesting vaccine mandates and passports, CNN reported Thursday.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Tuesday warned law enforcement across the country that a possible convoy of truckers starting up in the U.S. could affect Sunday’s Super Bowl in Los Angeles.

DHS said it received reports of truck drivers planning to potentially block roads in major metropolitan cities in the United States in protest of, among other things, vaccine mandates for truck drivers.

According to the agency:

“The convoy will potentially begin in California as early as mid-February and arrive in Washington, DC, as late as mid-March, potentially impacting the Super Bowl LVI scheduled for 13 February and the State of the Union address scheduled for 1 March.

(INSERT, S:  the convoy from west to east U.S. is scheduled to leave California on March 5th.)

“While there are currently no indications of planned violence, if hundreds of trucks converge in a major metropolitan city, the potential exists to severely disrupt transportation, federal government operations, commercial facilities and emergency services through gridlock and potential counter protests.”

The warning was circulated to law enforcement nationwide on Tuesday and was first reported by Yahoo News.

DHS on Monday released a “Summary of Terrorism Threat to the U.S. Homeland” bulletin stating the U.S. remains in a “heightened threat environment fueled by several factors ….”

Among the factors listed, was: “the proliferation of false or misleading narratives, which sow discord or undermine public trust in U.S. government institutions.”

(WXYZ) — Matt Moroun is urging the Canadian government to take action and end the blockade at the Ambassador Bridge, now on the fourth day of being closed. Moroun is the chairman of the Detroit International Bridge Company and the owner of the Ambassador Bridge.

. . .  The first option is to repeal the COVID-19 vaccine mandate, which is for truck drivers coming into the country.

End the protest by repealing the mandate and recognizing that while the vast majority of truck drivers are vaccinated, there are some who for many reasons are choosing not to get vaccinated but deserve to be respected and allowed to do their jobs and serve our countries with dignity,” Moroun wrote.

. . .   The Ambassador Bridge is the busiest border crossing between the United States and Canada, carrying $400 million in goods across it each day.

Citing insufficient data, Pfizer today said it will delay applying for Emergency Use Authorization of its COVID vaccine for infants and children 6 months to 4 years old.

The FDA in response postponed a meeting that had been scheduled for Feb. 15 to review Pfizer’s application for the pediatric vaccine.

Pfizer today said it will delay applying for Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) of its COVID vaccine for infants and children 6 months to 4 years old stating there’s not enough data on the efficiency of a third dose.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in response postponed a meeting that had been scheduled for Feb. 15 to review Pfizer’s application for the pediatric vaccine.

Two separate clinical trials of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID vaccine for the younger age group are in progress: one involving children between the ages of 6 months to 2 years old, the other involving children between ages 2 and 4.

CNBC last month reported two shots did not induce an adequate immune response in children 2 to 4 years old in Pfizer’s clinical trials, leading Dr. Anthony Fauci to predict children in that age group would need a three-dose regimen of the vaccine.

In what the New York Times described as a “highly unusual move,” the FDA urged Pfizer to apply for EUA of the vaccine, even though two doses failed to produce the hoped-for immune response among children 2 to 4 years old and the vaccine maker did not yet have data on the efficacy of a third shot.

Pfizer had planned to submit its application to the FDA next week, then provide additional data in the coming weeks on a third dose, NBC reported.

The FDA did not say when the Feb. 15 meeting would be rescheduled, and Pfizer did not indicate when it would submit the application.

Despite today’s news that Pfizer is delaying its application, Children’s Health Defense is asking everyone to send a message to the FDA asking the agency to Protect the Kids.

The National Institutes of Health on Feb. 4 urged the public to participate in National Wear Red Day as part of an American Heart Month initiative to spotlight heart disease as the number one killer of Americans.

That same day, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices overlooked thousands of reports of myocarditis, heart attacks and other cardiovascular events experienced by people who received COVID vaccines as the panel voted unanimously to recommend Moderna ‘Spikevax’ vaccine for people 18 and older.

These experimental COVID vaccines may pose more risk than benefit to the nearly 20 million American infants and preschool-aged children who will be eligible.

The shots don’t work

Pfizer’s clinical trial data showed that two doses failed to produce a “non-inferiority” immune response in 2- to 4 year-olds. According to partner BioNtech’s press release:

“Compared to the 16- to 25-year-old population in which high efficacy was demonstrated, non-inferiority was met for the 6- to 24-month-old population but not for the 2- to under 5-year-old population in this analysis …The decision to evaluate a third dose of 3 µg for children 6 months to under 5 years of age reflects the companies’ commitment to carefully select the right dose to maximize the risk-benefit profile. If the three-dose study is successful, Pfizer and BioNTech expect to submit data to regulators to support an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for children 6 months to under 5 years of age in the first half of 2022.”

In other words, Pfizer and BioNTech are evaluating a third dose because they have not yet found the right dose to maximize the risk-benefit profile for our youngest vaccine recipients.

And they won’t know if three doses will work until after the first two doses are approved. This is concerning. These are our babies.

Pfizer’s December 2021 press release noted the updates to its clinical trial were “informed by the effectiveness data for three doses of the vaccine for people 16 years and older, and the early laboratory data observed with Delta and other variants of concern, including Omicron, which suggest that people vaccinated with three doses of a COVID- 19 vaccine may have a higher degree of protection.”

However, breakthrough infections and hospitalizations have become commonplace among the vaccinated since that time. And we don’t know whether a third dose of this vaccine will increase the likelihood of adverse events.

What we do know is that there is no public health emergency for this age group. Children are at extremely low risk of serious outcomes from COVID.

Multiple studies attribute this to a stronger innate immune response in the upper respiratory tract that prevents viral replication early on. This may explain why children are also far less likely to contribute to disease transmission.

CDC data indicate deaths among children make up a fraction of a percentage of those who have died from COVID.

A study by Johns Hopkins showed a mortality rate of zero among 48,000 children without preexisting conditions and a large COVID study conducted in Germany found the case fatality rate among children is three out of a million, and zero deaths occurred in children under five.

But data about adverse events following Pfizer’s COVID vaccines continues to accumulate.

A Hong Kong study showed 1 out of 2,700 boys got myocarditis after receiving the Comirnaty vaccine. Among male adolescents, the incidence of myocarditis after the second dose was 37.32% per 100,000 people vaccinated.

A study from Kaiser found the same rate of myocarditis in 12- to 17-year-old American boys, 1 out of 2,700. This is alarming.

The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) has recorded more than 1,000,000 adverse events following COVID vaccinations: 31,545 of those were in children 17 and under.

Of the more than 23,000 reported deaths, including U.S. and foreign reports, 62 were children under age 17. VAERS also lists 829 cases of myocarditis and pericarditis in children following COVID shots.

With long-term health impacts still unknown and growing evidence of risks of myocarditis, neurological events, thrombosis and other serious side effects, the potential risks to our children likely outweigh any potential benefits.

We must act now!

Pfizer’s pediatric vaccine, if the FDA authorizes it for emergency use, will be available to more than 19 million children under the age of 5, many of whom already have robust natural immunity.

It also will be an important milestone in the pharmaceutical industry’s ultimate goal of getting COVID shots added to the CDC’s recommended childhood vaccine schedule, which means vaccine makers will have permanent immunity from liability for injuries and deaths caused by the vaccines.

If you’re seeing red, you’re not alone.

If the color red and the month of February are about love and heart health, then it’s time we reclaim those values to protect the hearts and health of those we love the most: our children.

What can you do?

Reach out to the regulatory authorities, local health departments, legislative offices and public officials and demand they join the “Don’t Break Our Heart. Protect our Health” campaign to stop the EUA of these experimental pediatric shots.

1. Send a letter of opposition, mailed in red envelopes to the public health officials and VRBPAC members involved in this decision-making process. Cover their desks in a sea of red envelopes! Use this letter CHD sent to the members of the VRBPAC committee from our advocacy portal or write your own.

On Friday, GoFundMe shut down the Canadian Trucker Freedom Convoy 2022 fundraiser, which was crowdfunding for the ongoing protests by truckers in Canada’s capital, Ottawa.

Both the mayor and police were pleased with the decision and admitted sending GoFundMe the request to takedown the fundraising page, which had raised more than 10 million.

“I want to sincerely thank the team at GoFundMe for listening to the plea made by the City and the Ottawa Police to no longer provide funds to the convoy organizers,” Ottawa’s Mayor Jim Watson tweeted.

The Ottawa Police also thanked the platform, writing: “We want to thank GoFundMe for listening to our concerns as a City and a police service. The decision to withhold funding for these unlawful demonstrations is an important step and we call on all crowdfunding sites to follow.”

In follow-up tweets, Watson explained that GoFundMe made the right decision because the truckers have been holding the city hostage. He believes that without funding, the protesters will leave the city.

“In light of the unlawful behavior that has transpired in the last few days, they have come to the right decision in support of our city and our residents,” Watson tweeted.

“These protesters have been holding our city hostage for a week now, and I’m hopeful that limiting their access to funding and resources will restrict their ability to remain in Ottawa.

“I am imploring similar crowdfunding platforms to take the same position and not enable the group in its fundraising efforts, which would deal a blow to our efforts to put an end to this occupation.”

However, the fundraising has been relaunched on the alternative crowdfunding platform GiveSendGo.

Journalist Megan Redshaw does a nice job of weaving together the situation of the family, and the conditions (U.S. Law) that apply in the event of  injuries or death caused by covid vaccination.

Under the CICP program, attorney fees are not covered. There is no court, judge or right to appeal.

I do not know the rules that apply under Canadian Law.

Kansas Woman Died From Allergic Reaction to Moderna COVID Vaccine, Autopsy Confirms

Jeanie Evans, 68, of Effingham, Kansas, died of “anaphylaxis due to COVID-19 vaccination,” according to her autopsy report. Evans died March 24, 2021, one day after her first dose of Moderna’s vaccine.

Miss a day, miss a lot. Subscribe to The Defender’s Top News of the Day. It’s free.

Jeanie Evans died of “anaphylaxis due to COVID-19 vaccination,” according to her autopsy report acquired by the Topeka Capital-Journal.

Evans, 68, of Effingham, Kansas, died March 24, 2021, one day after receiving Moderna’s COVID vaccine in Jefferson County.

According to the autopsy report, obtained from the Shawnee County coroner’s office through a Kansas Open Records Act request, Evans said her airway felt blocked about 15 to 20 minutes after she received her first dose on March 23, 2021.

She was taken by ground ambulance at 5:21 p.m. to Stormont-Vail hospital, where she died at 11:55 a.m. the next day.

Evans had a medical history of hypertension, environmental allergies, allergic disorders and reactive airway disease. She previously experienced an anaphylactic reaction to the drug Albuterol, the report said.

According to Mayo Clinic, anaphylaxis is a “severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction” that can occur within seconds or minutes of exposure to something you’re allergic to.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) website states anaphylaxis after COVID vaccination is rare and occurs in approximately five people per 1 million vaccinated in the U.S.

According to the most recent data from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System — co-managed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and CDC — there have been 2,300 reports of anaphylaxis following COVID vaccines, where the reaction was life-threatening, required treatment or resulted in death.

Colt Umphenour, one of Evans’ sons, said the family plans to file a lawsuit.

“I am actively looking for a new attorney to represent the family,” Umphenour said.

Members of Evans’ family last April hired Lynn Johnson, of the law firm Shamberg, Johnson and Bergman in Kansas City, Missouri. But Johnson told the Topeka Capital-Journal on Tuesday he chose not to pursue legal action on their behalf.

Vaccine makers exempt from liability for injuries caused by their products

As The Defender reported July 8, 2021, under federal law, vaccine makers are shielded from liability, leaving people who are injured by COVID vaccines and their family members with little recourse.

In 2005, Congress passed the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act (PREP), which authorizes the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to issue a declaration providing immunity from tort liability for claims of loss caused by medical countermeasures (e.g., vaccines, drugs, products) against diseases or other threats of public health emergencies.

On Feb. 4, 2020, HHS invoked the PREP Act when it declared COVID-19 to be a public health emergency.

On Jan. 21, 2021, HHS amended the act, extending the liability shield to include additional categories of qualified persons authorized to prescribe, dispense and administer COVID vaccines authorized by the FDA.

In exchange for immunity for vaccine makers, under the PREP Act, the federal government pledged compensation for adverse reactions to COVID treatments and vaccines through a program called the Countermeasures Injury Compensation Program (CICP), run by HHS.

The CICP in December 2021 approved its first COVID countermeasure claim, one of 65 claims related to anaphylaxis and anaphylactic reactions following COVID vaccines. The claim is pending review of eligible expenses.

The CICP website outlines the parameters of the program, which provides compensation for medical expenses, lost employment income and survivor death benefits as “the payer of last resort,” covering only what remains unpaid or unpayable by other third parties, such as health insurance.

Under the CICP program, attorney fees are not covered. There is no court, judge or right to appeal.

Children’s Health Defense asks anyone who has experienced an adverse reaction, to any vaccine, to file a report following these three steps.

Here is the full transcript of Archbishop Vigano’s endorsement

Dear Brothers and Sisters Canadian truck drivers,

The global coup that in these two years of psycho-pandemic farce has been carried out by the globalist elite appears most clearly if we do not limit ourselves to considering what happened in individual Nations, but broaden our gaze to what has happened everywhere.

Your protest, dear Canadian truck driver friends, joins a worldwide chorus that wants to oppose the establishment of the New World Order on the rubble of nation states, through the Great Reset desired by the World Economic Forum and by the United Nations under the name of Agenda 2030. And we know that many heads of government have participated in Klaus Schwab’s School for Young Leaders – the so-called Global Leaders for Tomorrow – beginning with Justin Trudeau and Emmanuel Macron, Jacinta Ardern and Boris Johnson, and before that Angela Merkel, Nicolas Sarkozy and Tony Blair.

It would seem that Canada is – along with Australia, Italy, Austria and France – one of the nations most infiltrated by the globalists. And in this infernal project we must not only consider the psycho-pandemic farce, but also the attack on traditions and Christian identity – indeed, more precisely the Catholic identity – of these countries.

You understood this instinctively, and your yearning for freedom was shown in all its coordinated harmony, moving towards the capital Ottawa. Dear truck drivers, you are facing great difficulties, not only because you give up your work to demonstrate, but also because of the adverse weather conditions, long nights in the cold, and attempts to be cleared away that you face. But along with these difficulties you have also experienced the closeness of many of your fellow citizens, who like you have understood the looming threat and want to support you in protesting against the regime. Allow me also to express to you my support and my spiritual closeness, to which I join the prayer that your event may be crowned with success and may also extend to other countries.

In these days we see the masks of tyrants from all over the world fall, and unfortunately we also see so much conformism, so much fearfulness, so much cowardice in people who up until yesterday we regarded as friends, even among our family members. Yet, precisely because of this extreme situation, we discover with amazement gestures of humanity made by strangers, signs of solidarity and brotherhood on the part of those who feel close to us in the common battle. We discover so much generosity and so much desire to shake us from this stupor. We discover that we are no longer willing to passively suffer the destruction of our world imposed by a cabal of unscrupulous criminals, thirsty for power and money.

In this relentless attack on the traditional world, not only your way of life and your identity have been affected, but also your possessions, your activities, and your work. This is the Great Reset, this is the future promised by slogans like Build Back Better, this is the future of billions of people being controlled in their every move, in all their transactions, in every purchase, every bureaucratic practice, every activity. Automatons without souls or wills, deprived of their identity, reduced to having a universal income that allows them to survive, to buy only what others have already decided to put up for sale, transformed by a gene serum into people who are chronically ill.

Today more than ever it is essential that you realize that it is no longer possible to passively assist: it is necessary to take a position, to fight for freedom, to demand respect for natural freedoms. But even more, dear Canadian brothers, it is necessary to understand that this dystopia serves to establish the dictatorship of the New World Order and totally erase every trace of Our Lord Jesus Christ from society, from history, and from the traditions of peoples.

Demonstrate for your rights, Canadian friends: but may these rights not be limited to a simple claim to the freedom to enter supermarkets or not to be vaccinated: may it also be a proud and courageous claim to your sacrosanct right to be free men. But your demonstration should be one of true freedom, reminding you that it is the Truth – that is, Our Lord Jesus Christ – who alone can guarantee you freedom: the truth will make you free.

I would like to conclude my appeal by asking you to pray with me, with the words that Our Lord has taught us: may they be the seal of this awakening, of this national liberation. Let us all pray it together, out loud, so that our prayer may rise to Heaven, but also so that it may resound powerfully in these squares, in these streets, all the way to the palaces of the powerful:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Pfizer announced Tuesday projected combined sales of its COVID vaccine and antiviral drug Paxlovid should top $54 billion in 2022, but the company’s stock dropped sharply today.

Pfizer announced Tuesday projected combined sales of its COVID vaccine and antiviral drug Paxlovid should top $54 billion in 2022, constituting more than 50% of the company’s expected revenues of about $100 billion.

The drugmaker predicted slightly lower 2022 revenues ($32 billion) for the vaccine compared to 2021, but increased revenues ($22 billion) from Paxlovid, the company’s COVID-19 pill.

Pfizer stock today “dropped sharply after the company’s 2022 sales guidance appeared to fall short of expectations,” Barron’s reported.

According to Barron’s:

“The antiviral sales guidance met the consensus estimate according to FactSet, but the Covid vaccine guidance fell short by $2.8 billion. The FactSet estimate for Pfizer’s overall revenue for 2022 was $103.2 billion, around $3 billion above the midpoint of Pfizer’s guidance range.”

Reporting on the news, ZeroHedge said the company added new language to its fourth-quarter earnings release, including the prediction that COVID could “diminish in severity or prevalence, or disappear entirely.”

The company also added language about the potential for “information regarding the quality of pre-clinical, clinical or safety data, including by audit or inspection” to have a negative impact on future earnings.

ZeroHedge suggested that language may have to do with last week’s ruling against Pfizer and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration which had wanted to delay the release of Pfizer’s clinical trial safety data.

In Tuesday’s announcement, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla predicted the company will manufacture 120 million doses of Paxlovid in 2022, including a threefold increase in production in the second half of the year as compared to the first. The FDA gave the drug Emergency Use Authorization in December 2021.

“2021 was a watershed year for Pfizer,” said Bourla. “Our successes in leading the fight against COVID-19 have not only made a positive difference in the world; I believe they have fundamentally changed our company forever.”How COVID-19 Vaccines Changed Pharma Profits

In fact, Pfizer’s 2021 profits doubled to $22 billion on the strength of its vaccine sales of more than 3 billion doses worldwide while the company’s total revenues in 2021 increased by 95% over the previous year, topping $100 billion for the first time in the company’s history.

The $36.8 billion the company made from its COVID vaccine alone was the highest annual sales total for any pharmaceutical product in history, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Flush with cash, the company engineered a number of recent acquisitions and partnerships to bolster its supply line of drugs and vaccines, including several partnerships announced last month to expand its growing mRNA business.

In December 2021, Pfizer announced it would acquire Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc. for $6.7 billion. Pfizer also said it had invested $25 billion on business development since 2019.

Sarat Sethi, managing partner and portfolio manager at DCLA, speaking on CNBC’s Squawk Box, said he thought the promise of COVID vaccine boosters in the future made Pfizer’s “balance sheet bulletproof.”

As Reuters reported, analysts forecast revenue of more than $6.6 billion for the Pfizer-BioNTech shot and $7.6 billion for Moderna in 2023, mostly from booster sales. They expect the annual market to settle around $5 billion or higher, with additional drugmakers competing for those sales.

In addition to the expectation of boosters, Pfizer said it is optimistic the FDA will approve its vaccine for children 6 months to 4 years old.

Bourla told CNBC he believes the FDA will authorize the company’s COVID vaccine for children under 5 years old under a fast-track process that allows the agency to review the data as soon as researchers compile it in real time.

“I think the chances are very high for the FDA to approve it,” Bourla said.

Initial results of the Pfizer trial with children under 5 showed no positive effects from the vaccine. Still, the FDA invited Pfizer to submit the vaccine for approval with the hope that a third booster shot, still untested, would show a benefit.

The FDA’s vaccine advisory committee is scheduled to meet Feb. 15 to consider approval of the shots for infants and toddlers.

B.C. is unlikely to follow in the footsteps of Saskatchewan and Alberta in loosening its COVID-19 restrictions such as proof of vaccination and mask mandates, Premier John Horgan said.

Horgan, in his post-Throne Speech comments Tuesday, was asked about Saskatchewan’s decision to end its proof of vaccination policy next week – as well as that province likely not renewing its mask mandate once it expires at the end of February.

The premier, however, was adamant. While he deferred the formal plan for B.C. to provincial health officer Bonnie Henry (who will announce the province’s approach next week), Horgan was abundantly clear in stating that B.C. will follow the advice of the health officials and not “elected officials.”

“With respect to different jurisdictions, everybody has addressed this in a different way,” Horgan said. “I will put our records up against all of the other provinces in the country; outcomes have been better in terms of mortality [and] impact on the economy.”

He noted that B.C.’s unemployment (5.1%) and job creation have both lead the country, and that the COVID hospitalizations are once again stabilizing after the Omicron variant sent new case numbers to unprecedented heights earlier this year.

Alberta premier Jason Kenney is scheduled to announce the lifting of that province’s COVID restrictions – which Kenney has characterized as damaging – later today. Horgan, however, said he will leave that decision to Henry.

“I believe that masks are effective in protecting people, and I don’t believe that an arbitrary decision by an elected official is the best way forward in that regard,” Horgan said. “Similarly, the immunization cards [are] supported by a vast majority of people to ensure that the sacrifices that they’ve made have provided benefits for them and their families moving forward.”

Horgan added the policy in B.C. will be “in-sync with the virus, not in-synch with a few protesters” – referring to the recent trucker convoys that have appeared in cities like Vancouver (and continue to persist in Ottawa) protesting vaccine requirements for cross-border truckers.

“I support the right to dissent,” he said. “But I don’t believe we should intrude on the lives of other people.

“I would suggest we are going to follow the same path we have been on since the pandemic began, and that is to take advice from counsel from public health officials who are working with our acute care system… to make sure we are continuing to protect people.”

During the media appearance, Horgan also addressed a number of issues – such as responding to criticism that the Throne Speech was lacking in detail and new initiatives for the NDP government’s plan for the province in 2022. Horgan said the plan will be fleshed out, mostly by the new provincial budget expected in two-week’s time, but also by an economic recovery plan that is slated to be announced by Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation minister Ravi Kahlon next week.

Horgan did say it is crucial for the province to get the plan right, since B.C. is facing both labour shortages and a continued lower level of retail, restaurant and tourism activity that will require a multi-faceted approach to address the complexity of the issues.

The premier also reiterated his support for B.C. to play host to both the 2026 FIFA World Cup of Soccer and the Invictus Games, provided that the organizers can give B.C. a clear picture of the cost. The shift in position, Horgan said, stemmed from the fact that the province is in need of any events that will draw large number of visitors back to B.C. after years of stymied international travel/tourism activity.

Lastly, Horgan also said he welcomed the opposition Liberals’ electing of new leader Kevin Falcon, but added that since former leader and Vancouver-Quilchena MLA Andrew Wilkinson was as the legislature today, the premier has not called a byelection for the riding – which is expected soon to give Falcon an opportunity to gain a seat in Victoria.

A Brave New World Without Rights: Ending Mandates Does Not Strip Government of the Ability to Do This Again, Julius Ruechel

The ongoing Truckers for Freedom convoy in Ottawa has triggered a shockwave that is reaching all around the world. Even as our authoritarian federal regime continues to double down on measures and threatens to use brute force tactics against peaceful protesters, many provinces are nervously beginning to lay out a timeline for ending mandates.

But there is something important missing from the conversation surrounding the end of mandates. If the mandates are simply dropped today without calling out the underlying legal and ethical fallacy that was used to justify them, government overreach will have become normalized. We will be left without the legal protections to stop them from doing this to us again after the truckers go home. All it will take to put us back in a cage is for the government to point at the next wave, the next virus variant, or the next non-Covid emergency. We will have normalized that our rights, our freedoms, our bodily autonomy, and even access to our lives are conditional privileges, subject to opinion polls and technocratic impulses, and that they can be withdrawn again at any time, “for our safety.”

(INSERT:  there is a 1.5 minute video on twitter.  93K views.  View it on Julius’ blog.  I am unable to upload it here.)

Quebec Health Minister Christian Dubé admits that vaccine passports and mandatory masks have no end in sight, and will remain “tools” to ensure a return to “normal life” when another wave hits.

In March of 2020, in violation of the principles embedded in our constitutions, governments around the world convinced citizens to give their leaders and public institutions the authority to overrule individual rights in order to “flatten the curve.” That impulse went unchallenged under the false assumption that human rights violations could be justified as long as the benefits to the majority outweighed the costs to the minority. By accepting this excuse for overriding unconditional rights, we transformed ourselves into an authoritarian police state where “might makes right”. That is the moment when all the checks and balances in our scientific and democratic institutions stopped functioning.

Liberal democracy was built around the principle that individual rights must be unconditional. In other words, they are meant to supersede the authority of government. Consequently, individual rights (such as bodily autonomy) were meant to serve as checks and balances on government power. They were meant to provide a hard limit to what our government can do to us without our individual consent.

If the government cannot override your rights to bend you to its will, then it will be forced to try to convince you by talking with you. That forces government to be transparent and to engage in meaningful debate with critics. Your ability to say NO, and to have your choice respected, is the difference between a functioning liberal democracy and an authoritarian regime.

The natural instinct of fearful people is to control those around them. Unconditional rights force people to negotiate voluntary participation in collective solutions. Thus, unconditional rights prevent the formation of echo chambers and provide an important counter-weight to rein in uncontrolled panic. When no-one has the option to use the brute force of State power to force others to submit to what they think is “the right thing to do”, then the only path forward is to keep talking to everyone, including to “fringe minorities” with “unacceptable views”. When we allow rights to become conditional, it is virtually a certainty that during a crisis, panicked citizens and opportunistic politicians will give in to their worst impulses and trample those who disagree with them.

Unconditional individual rights prevent governments from taking unwilling citizens on crusades. They prevent scientific institutions from transforming themselves into unchallengeable “Ministries of Truth” that can double down on their mistakes to avoid accountability. They ensure that the checks and balances that make science and democracy work do not break down in the chaos of a crisis. In the heat of an emergency when policy decisions are often made on the fly, unconditional rights are often the only safeguards to protect minorities from panicked mobs and self-anointed kings.

If we allow our leaders to normalize the idea that rights can be switched off during emergencies or when political leaders decide that “the science is settled”, then we are giving the government terrifying and unlimited power over us. It gives those who control the levers of power the authority to turn off access to your life. That turns the competition for power into a zero-sum game: the winners become masters, the losers become serfs. It means you can no longer afford to allow the other side to win an election, at any cost, nor agree to a peaceful transfer of power, because if you lose the winning team becomes the master of your destiny. And so, a zero-sum game of brutal power politics is set in motion. Unconditional individual rights are the antidote to civil war. Liberal democracy collapses without them.

Withdrawing mandates because “the Omicron variant is mild” or because “the costs of continuing the measures outweigh the benefits” does not undo what has been normalized and legitimized. If the legitimacy of mandates is not overturned, you will not be going back to your normal life. It may superficially look similar to your life before Covid, but in reality you will be living in a Brave New World where governments temporarily grant privileges to those who conform with the government’s vision of how we should live. You will no longer be celebrating your differences, cultivating your individuality, or making your own free choices. Only conformity will enable you to exist. You will be living under a regime in which any new “crisis” can serve as justification to impose restrictions on those who don’t “get with the program” as long as mobs and technocrats think the restrictions are “reasonable”. You will no longer be the master of your own life. A golden cage is still a cage if someone else controls the lock on the door.

Politicians and public health authorities MUST be forced to acknowledge that mandates are a violation of civil liberties. The public MUST be confronted by the fact that liberal democracy ceases to exist without the unconditional (inalienable) safeguards of individual rights and freedoms. The public MUST recognize that science ceases to function when mandates can be used to cut off scientific debates. Our governments and our fellow citizens MUST be made to understand that unconditional rights are especially important during a crisis.

If the legal and ethical fallacies that were used to justify mandates are not called out as inexcusable violations of our constitutional rights, we will have inadvertently normalized the illiberal idea that, as long as someone in a lab coat says it’s okay, this can be done to us again, at any time, whether to fight the next wave of Covid, to take away freedoms to fight “climate change”, to seize assets to solve a government debt crisis, or simply to socially engineer outcomes according to whatever our leaders define as a “fairer and more equitable world”.

How we navigate the end of mandates determines whether we win our freedom or whether we allow our leaders to normalize a Brave New World with conditional rights that can be turned off again during the next “emergency”.

Two Canadian provinces drop vaccine passports; “It is time for us also to heal the divisions in our communities”

On Tuesday, the premiers of the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta announced plans to end several Covid policies, including the divisive vaccine passports.

The two provinces will become the first to end the mandates that have been sparking protests all over the country.

Related: How vaccine passports are crushing freedom, privacy, and civil liberties

Saskatchewan’s Premier Scott Moe said that the province’s vaccine passport mandate will be removed on February 14, while Alberta’s Premier Jason Kenney said his province will remove the mandate on February 15 at midnight.

According to both premiers, the mandates have outlived their usefulness, and that it was time to heal the divisions caused by Covid measures.

“The program is no longer serving a useful and compelling purpose,” Mr. Kenney said on Tuesday. “I could not stand in front of Albertans tonight and justify a continuation of a program that has done its job.”

Moe said that the vaccine mandate would create “deep divisions,” adding that the mandate helped with the Delta strain, but its benefits do not outweigh the costs with the Omicron strain.

“It is time for us also to heal the divisions in our communities over vaccinations,” he said. Moe also asked residents not to judge each other on the basis of vaccination status or become adversarial to those who choose to continue wearing masks after the restrictions are lifted.

“Don’t lose a friend to COVID,” he implored.

Quebec also released a plan to lift most of the restrictions by mid-March. However, the vaccine and mask mandates will remain. Quebec’s Premier François Legault urged residents to decide for themselves about what is safe.

“We’ll have to learn how to live with the virus,” he said at a news conference in Quebec City. “What does that mean? It means that each person will have to evaluate their own risks. ‘I’m with how many people? How many have three doses? How many are over 60?’”
